How to Use a Sight Alignment Trainer for Snooker and Pool

Why check your sight line and stance?

In snooker and pool, the aiming process usually starts behind the cue ball. You study the object ball, choose a line and then walk into your address position. During that transition, your feet, shoulders or head can arrive at a slightly different angle from the one you saw while standing.

That does not mean every miss comes from your vision. Cue delivery, contact point, speed and table conditions all matter. But if the visual reference changes before the cue moves, you may repeat the same setup error and blame the stroke. A sight alignment trainer makes this early checkpoint easier to observe.

SIGHTRIGHT design and specifications

SIGHTRIGHT is made from aluminium alloy and measures 150 × 23 × 18 mm. The lower section is approximately 8 mm thick, with an upper section about 70 mm long. A curved front notch helps you position the trainer close to the cue ball.

The two-level structure creates front and rear visual references, while the silver center line helps you review direction. It is not intended to create a new aiming system. It simply makes an existing line easier to inspect during a repeatable drill.

How to use a sight alignment trainer: five steps

1. Choose the target line first.Read the shot as you normally would. Decide the intended cue-ball direction before placing the trainer, rather than changing the line to fit the tool.
2. Position the trainer.Place the curved notch near the cue ball and point the silver center line along your intended direction.
3. Check from your standing position.Stand behind the shot and confirm the reference line. Then step into your stance using the same rhythm you use in normal play.
4. Review the line after you step down.Look at the two planes and center line. If the reference shifts left or right, first review your feet and head position instead of forcing your neck into place.
5. Change one variable and repeat.Move only one thing, such as your front foot or the lateral position of your head. Stand up, reset and enter the shot again so the comparison stays clear.

How to add it to a daily snooker or pool routine

Use SIGHTRIGHT as a short setup check, not as something you need for every shot in a full session. Start with a straight, familiar shot and practise entering the stance without striking the ball five to ten times. Stand up, look again and repeat the approach each time.

When the setup feels more repeatable, add cueing and then gentle shots. Focus on whether your entry, head position and reference look similar from one attempt to the next. A phone recording from the front or behind can also help you compare what you feel with where your body actually is.

Common mistakes when using an alignment trainer

Mistake 1: treating a clear line as a guaranteed pot

The center line is a stance and sight reference. It cannot control your cue tip contact, delivery, speed, throw, cloth or cushion conditions. Keep the tool’s role limited to the part of the process it can show.

Mistake 2: twisting your neck to find the line

If you repeatedly force your head sideways while down on the shot, the entry into your stance may still be inconsistent. Stand up and review the foot placement and approach instead.

Mistake 3: copying somebody else’s exact head position

Body proportions, dominant eye habits and comfort vary. Use repeated observations to find a stable position that you can reproduce, rather than trying to make your stance look identical to another player’s.
